Part-time Professor
Quantitative Evaluation of Spirits · Artisan Distilling, Niagara College
Speaking & Education
Talks, workshops, courses, and briefings for students, researchers, product teams, and leaders. The examples, pace, and depth fit the audience; the scientific standards stay the same.
A career shaped by teaching
Martha began teaching through science demonstrations and teaching assistantships while completing her own studies. Her path has since moved through guest lecturing, course instruction, student supervision, and a part-time professorship, alongside more than two decades of research and industry practice.
That progression matters. She knows how to meet people where they are, make difficult material usable, and increase the depth without losing the room. A session can start with sensory science fundamentals or work at an advanced methodological level; the rigour stays constant while the language, pace, and examples change for the audience.

What Martha teaches
Content can be taught as an introduction, a technical deep dive, or a practical bridge between functions.
Understand perception, measurement, methods, and individual variation: how sensory systems work and what sensory data can and cannot tell us.
Thresholds, rating scales, difference testing, descriptive methods, liking and preference methods, study design, and interpretation.
The biological, psychological, experiential, and contextual sources of variation in perception.
Connect what people perceive and report with choice, behaviour, experience, and product use.
Move from a business decision to a credible evidence path, with the method chosen for the decision.
Match conclusions to the study design, decision threshold, and intended use, including the comparison, population, and context.
Use a broader model and systems view of product experience without losing rigour.
Create practical frameworks, shared standards, and confidence in choosing and using methods around a team’s live questions.
Formats & audiences
Each engagement is calibrated to what participants already know, what they need to do next, and how much technical detail will help.
Foundational courses, guest lectures, and clear pathways into sensory and consumer science.
Advanced methods, study design, measurement, interpretation, and constructive technical challenge.
Workshops that connect R&D, insights, marketing, quality, regulatory, and commercial decisions.
Concise briefings that clarify the evidence, uncertainty, trade-offs, and decision implications.
